The Mechanical Butterfly

July 5, 2019 by remyandsasha Leave a Comment

I got the kittens one of those mechanical butterflies, and Chance just about lost his mind.

It’s only happened a couple of times and when it does I just put the kittens in their room and close the door. He usually gets over whatever it is in a day or so and his relationship with the kittens is unfazed. They love each other and have a great time together, and the whole relationship is exactly what I was hoping for. Chance needed friends he could hang out with while I’m at work, which is all the time, and I needed to be confident that friend would be able to “hold it” as long as Chance does. His bladder is super-canine. I’ve never met a big dog like him. The next option was a cat, and I thought it was a good one. He’ a gentle guy, but he’s been an only dog since our Sophie continued her journey about 2 years ago. They were very close, and we were very sad when she left us.

The problem with the cat idea was that my kids are all highly allergic. They’re also all highly grown and either highly married or highly engaged, but nevertheless I don’t want them to be uncomfortable in my home when they visit so I researched hypoallergenic cats. I was surprised to find several but I also needed the cat to like (or at least not hate) dogs, and that narrowed the contestants considerably. That’s when I discovered the Bengal, and the rest is history. The kids haven’t been around since Remy and Sasha came home (we’re spread out) so I can’t yet attest to the hypoallergenic claim. But they absolutely do love Chance. LOVE him. They initiate playtime more than he does, invade his space at will and eat the food out of his bowl, Remy flies at him from out of nowhere and lands right on his face and lives to see another day, and it’s still all one big happy. Mostly.

Two months into this lifelong commitment I’ve made with this motley crew, and never once have I regretted it. It took months before I felt 100% sure I was ready for a Bengal, and then I ended up with two which was the best decision ever. They are SO active, it’s seriously ridiculous. All kittens are playful but Bengal kittens are lunatics. Hilarious lunatics, but still. If you’re reading this and considering a Bengal, seriously consider getting two. If not another Bengal then another kitten at least, because these guys wear each other out and save my sanity.

One Bengal characteristic I read about repeatedly in my research was that they’re not affectionate. This is absolutely not true in Remy and Sasha’s case. They love to be touched and petted, and both will lay in my lap or on my shoulder for just as long and with the same frequency as any other cat I’ve had. Of course I can probably credit my breeder with that one.

This Bengal life so far is pretty good stuff. Good decision me.

Rembrandt, 4 1/2 months old

At 18 weeks, Remy weighs 7 pounds and his markings are becoming more visible. He’s well past the “fuzzies” and has developed a lush, glossy coat. Bengals are known to be active, curious, highly energetic cats, and Remy is no exception. He’s not destructive, but holy crap is he a handful sometimes. This boy fears nothing, and I’ve only just started wearing shorts this summer because nothing delights him more than pouncing on my leg like it’s a moving target.

Remy’s Markings At 14 Weeks

June 6, 2019 by remyandsasha Leave a Comment

The markings develop gradually in a marbled Bengal, making it impossible to predict what a marbled Bengal kitten will look like as an adult cat. Some of Rembrandt’s markings were well-defined right away, like the stripes and diamonds on the back of his neck; others, like the faint reddish ones on his sides, are still barely noticeable.

At 14 weeks, the texture of Rembrandt’s coat has changed, too. He’s grown out of the “fuzzies” and into the smooth, sleek, incredibly soft pelt Bengals are known for.

Versace, 14 Weeks

About a week ago I gave the kittens a little hedgehog that squeaks when it’s batted around. They loved it, and therefore Chance felt compelled to remove the squeaker with the surgical precision of a T-Rex. Today, Sasha found the furry little carcass and practiced his growling skills whenever one of the other boys got too close. It was pretty hilarious. I had hoped my camera would pick up his latest display of ferocity, but alas. The video’s still pretty cute, though.

Remy and Sasha’s First Doctor Visit

May 31, 2019 by remyandsasha Leave a Comment

Took the boys to Dr. Gold today for a check-up and their first vaccinations. Sasha is 14 weeks old and weighs 4.1 pounds; Remy is 13 weeks old and weighs 4.9 pounds. I’ve been feeding them one 3 ounce can of kitten food in the morning and a half can at night, with dry food available all the time. The doctor advised me to reduce the wet food to a half can twice a day, as “they’re close to being overweight.” They’re pretty lean if you ask me, but I didn’t hand the guy $400 bucks because he’s an ignoramus so half a can it is.

Chance also received his annual vaccinations, along with his monthly Cytopoint injection for allergies, and a nail trim. His appetite decreased dramatically when I brought the kittens home, and as a result he’s lost 6 pounds. He’s down to a much healthier 73.8 pounds.

Chance Encounters of the Close Kind

May 28, 2019 by remyandsasha Leave a Comment

In this video, Remy and Sasha have been home for 3 1/2 weeks and are 11 and 12 weeks old respectively. Chance has learned to play appropriately with the kittens, and displays zero prey drive even when they’re ripping through the house like a couple of Mr. Farenheits. This was the first time I’d seen them display such a comfortable bond.

I’m pretty sure this is how Crazy Cat Ladies get started.

Up Close and Personal

May 11, 2019 by remyandsasha Leave a Comment

Chance got his first official look at Remy and Sasha eight days after they came home. We had some work to do in learning to control his enthusiastic response to these little creatures, so we took it one encounter at a time.
